The Great Famine, a man-made demographic catastrophe, took place in Ukraine in 1932-33. It was started by the communist authorities of the USSR. The famine was a direct assault on the Ukrainian peasantry, who had stubbornly continued to resist collectivization. The impounding of agricultural produce, without leaving any reserves, even for sowing, resulted in the death of nearly 4 million Ukrainians. The famine of 1932–33 is often called the Holodomor, a term derived from the Ukrainian words for hunger (holod) and extermination (mor).
As Poles, we do remember those events. The resolution of the Senate of the Republic of Poland of March 16, 2006, recognizing the Great Famine as an act of genocide, pays tribute to its victims and commemorates this crime. In order to honor the memory of the victims in Ukraine, including Poles, we encourage you to join the action to light a candle in the window of your home on November 28, 2020 (Saturday). This way, we will participate in the international action “Let’s light a candle of memory!” - a minute of silence for victims of violent repression in Ukraine.
The organiser of the action in Lublin is the Consulate General of Ukraine in Lublin, which on its Facebook page publishes information, video and photo materials about the events of that time. On the 87th anniversary of those terrible events, let us light symbolic candles of memory for the nameless and innocent victims of the totalitarian regime, to honor the memory of millions of Holodomor victims and to bring the truth about the genocide against the Ukrainian people to the world community.
