This year’s East of Culture will take place between July, 6 - 10. The festival will feature artists from ten countries and three different continents over five days. The stage in Lublin, unlike any other scene in Poland, will host unique performers such as Shibusashirazu Orchestra, Tortoise and Easy Star All Stars.

Like in the past, for a few days in July, Lublin will become a hub of various sounds and music genres performed by hundreds of artists. The festival aims to present a wealth of the most original artists and international music trends as well as the quest for a unique element turning the performers into artistic phenomena and transforming music into a sound revolution leading the music world to an inspiring novelty. The outstanding artistic quality, creativity and emphasis on creative exploring the artistic dimension have always been the premise of the festival. Over the course of the festival, jazz and classical music fuse with avant-garde and electronica, ethnic music merges with the sharp sounds of clipped guitars, reggae and hip hop blend with improvised instrumental music Bringing together different music genres and acts is to grip and enchant the audience by evoking lots of unforgettable feelings and unique experiences.

This year, the stage in Lublin will host another group of pioneers and leading artists in their music genres. The headline acts will include an exclusive performance of Shibusashirazu Orchestra. The big band consisting of over thirty artists creates a dazzling spectacle combining elements of jazz, rock’n’roll and dance music, complementing all this with fabulous mise-en-scene and costumes. Their concerts offer an exquisite feast for the senses and a large scale of entertainment lasting over two hours. Tortoise is another stylistically different leading band,. Music critics unanimously claim Chicago artists have been one of the most leading post-rock and instrumental bands over the past 25 years. Their concerts offer a unique experience. A boiling pot of the excellent sound, virtuosity, dazzling arrangements as well as impressive trance compositions make Tortoise a world-class band. New Yorkers from Easy Star All Stars are also one of the festival’s headliners. What makes the band distinctive is their reworking selected albums of legendary artists such as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. The music lovers around the world have been gripped by the band’s reggae and dub arrangements. The band in the concerts provides the attendees with lots of positive energy and the merriment of live music and has a captivating natural contact with audience.

It is traditional that the East of Culture festival saturates with record labels. This year the famous German label Staubgold will appear. The publishing company founded and run by Markus Detmer has become a recognizable brand in alternative music market in Europe. Staubgold, set up in the 90s, first published electronic and alternative music in German market and then extended their activity to other parts of the world and music genres. An extensive catalogue of the music record company consists of big names such as Can, Faust, Klangwart and Kammerflimmer Kollektief. Not only Markus Detmer himself (he will present an extensive Staubgold Special dj set) but also two more exquisite bands will appear at the festival. These are the aforementioned Kammerflimmer Kollektief and Aksak trio consisting of Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Mertin i Jozef Suchy. Jaki Liebezeit who is considered one of the best percussionists of his generation (he co-founded Can band - the fathers of krautrock, and cooperated with Chet Baker, Brian Eno, Eurythmics and Depeche Mode) will top the bill in the event.

Furthermore, East of Culture – Different Sounds festival also captures the most interesting cultural and artistic events and acts from the countries of the Eastern Partnership. This year the leading role will be played by Ukrainian artists, whom a special programme of events called Orient Station-Ukraine will be dedicated to.

The programme is saturated with the events for cinema-goers, likewise literature and contemporary art lovers. Nevertheless, the youngest audience will have the opportunity to attend a special programme called Little Different Sounds, which will offer workshops presenting different music genres and allow the participants to play spontaneously with sound.

There are yet more surprising events to come and the complete line-up is yet to be announced. The organizers will shortly provide more details as to extra artist to perform at the festival.

East of Culture is a joint cultural project involving artistic groups from cities of Eastern Poland (Białystok, Lublin and Rzeszów) and artists from the countries of the Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) which is supported by the National Centre for Culture and the three cities in question.
