Thirty-fourth anniversary of the imposition of the martial law in Poland

The commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the imposition of the martial law by the communist authorities on 13th December 1981 was held in Lublin on 13-14 December 2015. The commemoration was initiated by lighting a candle by the “Flame of Memory to the Victims of Communism” street lamp located on ul. Królewska 3 on Sunday, December 13, at 8 a.m.

The programme on 14th December included: the historical re-enactment, an urban game, forming the cross from white and red bricks by the monument of the Constitution of the Third of May, the concert of “the rebel song” in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Victorious located on ul. Narutowicza 6, the mass in memory of victims of martial law at 6 p.m., placing flower wreaths and lighting a candle by the monument of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.

The organisers of the commemoration in Lublin were: NSZZ Solidarność Mid-East Regional Management, Institution of the National Remembrance (branch in Lublin), the State Archive in Lublin, Ruch Solidarności Rodzin Foundation.

Mayor of the City of Lublin, Marshal of Lubelskie Region and Governor of Lubelskie Region took honorary patronage of the event.

The detailed programme of the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the imposition of martial law:

13th December 2015 – Tarnogród

  • 10.30 - meeting by the cultural centre in Tarnogród and the march of participants to a parish church
  • 11.00 - Holy Mass
  • the march of participants to the parish cemetery and placing flower wreaths on the grave of Józef Giza (a miner who was murdered during the pacification at the Wujek mine)
  • the artistic performance delivered by the pupils from the State Junior High School in Tarnogród

14th December 2015 – Lublin

  • 12.00 - (after the bugle call) lighting a candle by the “Flame of Memory to the Victims of Communism” street lamp located on ul. Królewska 3 and playing the “Śpij Kolego...” melody
  • 12.15 - an urban game involving issues connected with the martial law
  • 12.00-14.15 - patrols of ZOMO and ORMO and the re-enactment of demonstration organised on Plac Litewski (the Litewski Square)
  • 14.15-14.30 - forming the cross from bricks by the monument to the Constitution of the Third of May (the Litewski Square)
  • 14.30-15.00 - an army-style pea soup served on the Litewski Square
  • 16.45-18.00 - the Concert of the Rebel Song (Koncert Pieśni Niepokornej) to honour the victimised and the interned during martial law
  • 18.00 - a Holy Mass for the Homeland and in memory of all the victims of the martial law
  • the march to the “Flame of Memory to the Victims of Communism” street lamp and to the memorial plaque in honour of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, the patron of NSZZ “Solidarność” and placing flower wreaths.
