Lubomelski's Tenement House

Lubomelski's Tenement House
Address: ul. Rynek 8
Place: Lublin
Post code: 20-111

In the place where the burgher house at 8 Rynek Street is located, the buildings already stood at the turn of 14 th and 15 th centuries. In written sources, it appeared only in 1522 as a brick building owned by Jan Lubomelski, who held the position of Lublin councillor. The house was rebuilt in 1540 as is evident from the preserved fragment of the portal featuring the inscription “Jan Lubom”, date and the Zadora coat of arms. The burgher house is of great historical values. In the room of the former wine cellar, the secular paintings created after 1580 and depicting the bacchic motifs were preserved. The characters appearing in scenes as well as the inscriptions testify to the high literary and cultural level of Lublin during the Renaissance.

During World War II, the occupying authorities became interested in the burgher house mainly due to the polychromes containing the German-language inscription, which were in the so-called cellar under Fortuna, Therefore, the cellars of the building at 8 Rynek St. underwent maintenance. After the war, the burgher house became the property of the State Treasury and in 1954 the façade was renovated. In the years 1959-1960 much more extensive renovation works took place. In the years 1996-2000 a general renovation of the building was carried out, including, among others, conservation of facade and renovation works related to the vault that once covered the polychromes from the 16th century.

Nowadays, the building houses the tourist facility The Cellar Under Fortune.
