The Literary Museum of Józef Czechowicz is a branch of the Lublin Museum in Lublin. The idea to establish the museum was born in the late 1950s in a local literary community. Stanisław Fita and Lech Ludorowski were the first who proposed to found the museum. The idea was met with interest of the city authorities. Establishing the museum became real in the years 1963-1965 when Tadeusz Kłak - the head of the Museum of Bolesław Prus in Nałęczów - collected a huge number of documents, letters and manuscripts by Józef Czechowicz and basing on them he developed the first project of the permanent exhibition of the museum.

The museum was opened on September 9, 1968, on the 29th anniversary of the poet's death. For nearly thirty years of its activity it was located in the historic, former monastery building at 10 Narutowicza Street. In 1999 it had to change its seat. For three years the museum operated in the Manor of Wincenty Pol and at the same time the new seat was being renovated – on September 9, 2002 the museum inaugurated its activity in the tenement house at 3 Złota Street, donated to the city for cultural purposes by the family of Riabinin.

The museum presents manuscripts, artifacts, publications and scientific materials related to the life and work of Józef Czechowicz. In addition, the Museum has a rich collection of works of other writers from the Lublin region, as well as manuscripts of prominent Polish authors such as: Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, Zbigniew Herbert, Jerzy Zagórski, Julian Tuwim and others. The collection also includes extensive photographic documentation of Lublin literary life, a rich collection of books, magazines, films, recordings, memorabilia and occasional prints.
