The Lublin Underground Trail is a nearly 280-meter tourist route running under the Old Market Square and tenement houses of the Old Town. It was created by connecting several old-town cellars, which history dates back to the beginning of 16 th century that is the century of the greatest splendour of Lublin. The cellars were partially connected by corridors and in this way an underground labyrinth was built under the city.
A walk through the historic old-town cellars, which itself provides great emotions, is at the same time a journey in time enabling to discover the past of the city. The history of Lublin's spatial development is illustrated by the mock-ups showing the city from the 8th century, through the Middle Ages and the 16th century. In the basement there are also two mock-ups showing the old panoramas of the city: the oldest view of Lublin from the 16th century and the most famous view from the first half of the 17th century. The climax of the underground journey is a moving model of the Great Fire of Lublin (1719), enriched with light and sound. The visualization was created on the basis of the painting located in the church of the Dominican Order (being a memento of this fire) and archival written sources.
An additional attraction of the underground trail are the Mondays shows. The Lublin Underground Trail connects two important places for Lublin: it begins in the old town hall, that is in the center of secular power and ends at the remains of the church of St. Michael Archangel, which in the past was the center of religious life of the city.
