“Tactile Narratives about the History of Lublin” is a scholarship project realized from February to November 2018 by Magdalena Szubielska in cooperation with the Lublin History Museum (Cracow Gate) and the Centre for Inclusion of Students with Special Needs of the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL CAN).
The first stage of the project involves the preparation of tactile graphics (described in both the Braille system and enlarged print) which depict a selection of Lublin monuments, people and events relevant to the city's history, as well as maps and plans showing the development of Lublin over the centuries. The tactile graphics will be used as teaching aids during a special guided tour of the city and its museums for people with visual impairment. Project participants will have an opportunity to listen to the stories told by city guides and museum curators, while the tactile graphics will help them "see" what the city looked like in the past and what it is like today. The project also involves the preparation of four tactile picture books devoted to four legends about our city: "The Legend about the Origin of the name of Lublin," "The Legend about the Goat of Lublin," "The Legend about the Dream of Leszek the Black," "The Legend about the Devil’s Paw." Tactile pictures for these books for these books will be created during workshops using various techniques, i.a. collage. The workshops are for young visual artists and visually impaired people of all age groups.
