Folk songs of the Polish-Lithuanian borderline in Lublin Province

The workshops in traditional singing organized by the Music of the Borderline Foundation and Lublin authorities have just ended. The event was a part of a project called “Let’s meet – different does not mean alien.” Workshops and training for young people. From the 5th of May, 13 young Poles and Ukrainians from Lublin were learning traditional singing. Their tutors were Hanna Ochrimczuk from Kiev and Monika Manińska from Lublin. The participants were learning about the oldest remaining examples of folk music from our region.
They performed some of them for a small audience on Sunday. In the summer and autumn the group will continue their work during 2 week workshops and then they will have a chance to present their vocal skills during the Oldest Songs of Europe Festival, which will take place in Lublin in October. The project “Let’s meet – different does not mean alien.” Workshops and training for young people is carried out by the city authorities in cooperation with the Music of the Borderline Foundation, "Chatka Żaka” student cultural centre, Centre for Theatre Practice Gardzienice and the Ukrainian Society in Lublin. The aim of the project is to show local cultural frameworks of the multiethnic Polish-Ukrainian borderline. A part of the project involves organizing workshops and artistic events where young people from various socio-cultural backgrounds and representing different ethnic groups can get to know each other better. The project was granted a € 20 000 subsidy from the European Commission after winning a competition organized by National Cultural Centre in Warsaw – the coordinator of the celebrations of European Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Poland.
