From September 6 through October 18 you can visit the exhibition of works by Urlike Grossarth, a German artist, entitled "28 Szeroka Street." The exhibition takes place in the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
The exhibition is connected with the award that the artist received. It was a prestigious award Kathe-Kollwitz 2009 for the whole of her artistic achievements. The exhibition reflects the newest inspirations of the artist.
Urlike Grossarth is fascinated by the Jewish culture and its heritage and she travels around Central-Eastern Europe. She decided to present in Berlin her latest discovery - photos of pre-war Lublin taken by Stefan Kiełsznia. During one of her visits in Lublin, she encountered Kiełsznia's works, a beautiful collection capturing the Jewish past of Lublin. In 1938, just before the world disappeared, he took photos of the everyday life of the Jewish quarter. 120 out of 600 photos have survived and can be seen in "Grodzka Gate - NN Theatre" in Lublin.
Black-and-white photographs have inspired Urlike Grossarth. She focused on some details and emphasized them with the use of color. The exhibition shows both old and new versions of the photos. Thanks to cooperation with "Grodzka Gate - NN Theater" and with the support of museum institutions from Dresden and Berlin, photos of Kiełsznia and Urlike Grossarth will visit three cities next year - Dresden, Berlin, and Lublin.
Urlike Grossarth was born in 1952 in Oberhausen, she studied dance in Cologne and Essen. Since 1998 she has been a professor in Dresden Art Academy. In 1997, her work "BAU I" took part in the famous exhibition "Documenta X."
