Anatoly is a stoker at a monastery. He spends all days carrying coal. He lives in the furnace shed, sleeps on a pile of coal. The monks are bewildered by his odd conduct. They cannot explain why he throws other peoples’ shoes into fire, shouts, doesn’t pay due respect to the hegumen. There is a reason behind every case of his odd behaviour. This way he draws the attention of others to what is important. The island is visited by people, who travel for a long time to see Anatoly, because they believe he can provide them with a wise answer, cure diseases and find consolation for their sorrows. He never refuses to help, but he is also the one who suffers inside burdened with the guilt for a sin he once committed.
