On the night of 16/17 March 1942 the liquidation of the Lublin ghetto in Podzamcze began. Then, the first transport of 1.4 thousand people was sent to the Bełżec extermination camp. Until the mid-April 1942, 26.000 Jews were sent there. The date 16 April 1942 is considered to be the beginning of the Operation Reinhard – the mass murder of Jews in the General Government.
Year 2013 marks the 71st anniversary of the liquidation of the Lublin ghetto and the beginning of the Operation Reinhard - the mass murder of Jews in the General Government. To honour this occasion, “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre invites young inhabitants of the city and their teachers as well as the citizens of Lublin to take part in The Mystery of Light and Darkness - a symbolic commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust.
