This project combines dance, music and virtual arts. Three artists, dancer Justyna Jasłowska, multimedia artist Ludomir Franczak and musician Marcin Dymiter, will transfer the phenomenon of Josephine Baker onto the city stage, combining her experience with conviction that rhythm lies at the bottom of all defiance. Rhythm allows us to raise and make declarations. Rhythm is the base for resistance, battle with convention and the best example for it is Josephine Baker’s style of dancing, primal, wild, which emerged as an opposition to reality and, simultaneously, as an expression of sensuality coming within the body.
The way of presenting history of defiance through rhythm and dance. From sufi trances through Chachen Legzhinka to rituals of Haitian voodoo, samba paulista or Kurdish dances of defiance. The cycle of motion and dance which come from within, and escape all conventions, finally becomes conventional. Body and rhythm used for battling with reality has a great acting power. The use of intuition by deriving it from our own tradition and our own trance.
The project is realized in convention of a spectacle where form and sound are created live, on the spot, and the performers incorporate dance routine into their world. The planned event is the first one created in this make-up and, at the same time, a premiere of the project. Music score and visual images are being created live by a duo emiter_franczak during the performance. Music and image are also the background for dancing performance of Justyna Jasłowska whose movements interpret dance moves of Josephine Baker anew and put them against wider historical and modern setting.
