A story of people who are unable to love because of war trauma - this is the most common reading of this unique cinematic masterpiece. However, one could easily interpret "The Last Day of Summer" as a study of loneliness; regardless of the reasons why the two protagonists - a man and a woman - meet on a deserted beach, they can't or do not want to get close enough to each other. Filmed on location on the Baltic beaches by a group of friends, this poetic movie anticipates the arrival of the New Wave, which was soon to conquer the cinematography of Europe.
