“The Flying Trunk” by H. Ch. Andersen is a result of cooperation between the Hans Christian Andersen Theatre and Turkish artists.

The creators of the show weave together an oriental tale, the life of Andersen himself and other motifs from his fairy tales (such as ‘The Ugly Duckling’) and, by doing so, they tell a story which is a blend of a fairy tale and reality, of the Orient and the modern Western world.

After the death of his father, loss all his fortune and alleged friends, our protagonist is all alone. His only possession is an old trunk which unexpectedly reveals its magic qualities. Floating across the sky, Hans turns up in Istanbul. Lost and fascinated by the unknown world, he lands in the chambers of a Turkish princess who is imprisoned by own her father, the ruler of Turkey. The sultan keeps her locked up to protect her from unhappy love that has been foretold.

The two young people are immediately drawn to each other and Hans, being a skillful story-teller as he is, wins a favour with the sultan and his wife. But the prophecy has been made and the fate written in the stars isn’t easy to be changed.

The play is a part of celebrations of 2014 as the Year of Polish Culture in Turkey.
