The Public Centre for Documentation of the Pontificate of Pope John Paul II (Społeczne Centrum Dokumentacji Pontyfikatu Jana Pawła II) operates within the Memory of John Paul II Society, an organization formed in 1997, initially named “The Centre for Documentation of the Pontificate of Pope John Paul II”.
The Centre, as the only institution of such kind in Poland, gathers data on all modes of commemorating John Paul II’s pontificate in the form of documents, literature and exhibits. Ther are over 30,000 units of materials gathered.
They comprise magazines, newspapers, books and coffee table books, records, compact discs and recordings, stamps, coins and medals as well as a variety of interesting objects. The Centre owns a full documentation of so called ‘Papal Cities and Communes’ and numerous data on streets, squares, monuments, commemorative plaques, posts and institutions that carry the name of John Paul II. The Centre also exhibits their collections, organizes competitions and many meetings in a range of places: libraries, educational facilities, churches and similar locations.
The Centre works in close cooperation with such institutions as: the Centre for Thought of John Paul II in Warsaw, the John Paul II Institute and the Museum to Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński at the Temple of Divine Providence in Warsaw as well as the Intercultural Dialogue Institute of John Paul II in Kraków and the Have No Fear! John Paul II Centre in Kraków.
The President of the Memory of John Paul II Society, Ryszard Zawadowski, is the founder and curator of the collection. The collection and the documentation are stored at the President’s private house in Rejowiec Fabryczny.
