Nói Albinói, directed by Dagur Kári, running time: 93’, 2003
People usually associate Iceland with originality with regard to both its climate and geographic location. It is the same with Icelandic culture. Apart from being home to numerous outstanding artists like Björk or Sigur Rós, Iceland also prides itself on its remarkable cinema. One of the representatives of Icelandic cinema, Dagur Kári is the director of films such as “Nói Albinói” and “Dark Horse.” The former will launch our new film series: Miasto na prowincji / Small Towns. The film tells a story about teenage Nói who lives in some remote part of the freezing and hostile West Iceland. More than by unfavorable weather conditions, he is nagged by the residents of the little town he lives in. Misunderstood unaccepted and considered slow-witted, the boy dreams about fleeing the place. The director offers a marvelous portrayal of the routine and monotony of the small town community, combined with internal struggles of the individual who does not fit in there. Young Tomas Lemarquis is brilliant in the role of Nói. The entire film is permeated with a bit cold yet peculiarly moving spirit typical of the Scandinavian cinema.
