Eye to the Balkans Film Festival (Festiwal Filmowy Oko na Bałkany): DAY TWO

2pm – 3:30pm Globetrotters’ Meeting

BUSiMY, i.e. a group of students who decided to make their travelling dreams come true. Having chipped in, they collectively bought a sizeable car that became their mobile home. Together, they visited a few dozen countries, including of course the Balkans. This year they are planning a tour of South America. During the Festival, they will share with us a set of recollections of their Croatian adventures.

3:45pm – 5:00pm Film screenings (short films and documentaries):

When I see Tanya directed by Juraj Lerotić 2010.

The mother of Željko (aged 16) and his younger brother is in hospital. The boys are left to their own devices, living together in the family’s house. Željko promised himself to do two things – to finally pluck up the courage and meet Tanya. Also, he will get hold of enough money to buy his mother a natural hair wig. Then everything will be alright. For sure. Undoubtedly so. “When I see Tanya” is a magical, entrancing and engulfing story made of photographs.

Zovko Teleport directed by Predrag Licina 2013.

The movie takes place in the future, fifty years after teleportation became a typical means of transportation in advanced, i.e. affluent countries. However, though the plot is set in the not-so-near future, there is no teleportation available in Croatia. The country’s residents willing to travel to remote places are forced to use teleportation stations in neighbouring countries. Martina Kraljević hears a radio infomercial advertising a newly-launched Croatian teleportation station. Her husband Robert has already been teleported three times – always on business matters. Martina is a bit jealous of Robert’s threefold experience. Martina persuades Robert to take advantage of the new teleporting service called “Zovko Teleport” and travel on family holidays, accompanied by their son, a primary school pupil, and a teenage daughter. As their luck would have it, even the best laid plans may go awry …

A village without women directed by Srdan Šarenac 2010.

There are three brothers. They live in a small village, nestled high in the mountains of southern Serbia, close to the Kosovar border. There is not even a single woman in the village and each brother dreams of finding a wife. They tried their luck in neighbouring villages but all in vain. None of the women wanted to live at the top of the mountain. Fortunately, Kosovo is chock-a-block with villages populated solely by women. All one needs is to cross the border. The men are not keen on politics. They are eager to get married to Albanians. However, politics is very much interested in them and in their lives. Can a marriage between people coming from inimical countries work out?
