Children's play: "The Flying Trunk" ("Latający kufer")

„The Flying Trunk” is based on a short story by Hans Christian Andersen and was created jointly with the theatre milieu of Turkey. The creators of the play infuse their on-stage tale with the life story of Andersen himself as well as rely on intertextual references to other works by the Danish writer, for instance, “The Ugly Duckling”. By doing so, the fabled and imaginary become intertwined with the real and the world of the Orient is enmeshed in the present that the Eastern Europeans are familiar with.

At the beginning, Hans - the play’s protagonist - falls on hard times: after losing his father and wealth, he is abandoned by friends. His only asset is his old trunk, which to his surprises turns out to be quite extraordinary. Hovering high in the sky, gliding over clouds, Hans swiftly reaches Istanbul. There, lost, alienated and perplexed by the unknown country he makes his way into the chamber of a princess, whose father and the sovereign of Turkey keeps locked away in her room. He does so to protect her against unfortunate love that was prophesied in her youth. Hans and the princess immediately strike up a friendly relationship. Thanks to his gift of storytelling, Hans ingratiates himself with the sultan and his wife. Sadly, the prophecy still hangs over the couple as it is almost impossible to change one’s fate – especially when it has been written in the stars.

The play was conceived and produced as part of the celebrations of the Year of Polish Culture in Turkey in 2014.

Turkish theatre director Ece Okay was invited to participate in the preparation of the play.
