The exhibition ”The Signs of Freedom. Solidarity Posters From the Years 1980-1989” (Znaki wolności. Plakaty „Solidarności” z lat 1980-1989) displays about 35 posters from the collection of Danuta and Jerzy Brukwicki. The posters tell a story about man and the meaning of life, about the birth of Solidarity, the martial law period and everyday harsh realities of that difficult time. They provide a commentary on the social and cultural transformations taking place in Poland at that time.

The Solidarity posters are characterized by the use of strong single signs, a diversity of images and reflections, along with a concise way of communicating ideas and concepts. They are fascinating owing to the symbols they use, their prudent interpretation of different ideas and causes, as well as powerful emotional charge. Devoid of redundant details, these posters impress with their clarity and simplicity of graphic design.

The exhibition runs until 27 January 2015.
