The January Benshi Film Club screenings and meetings will focus on British director Mike Leigh.
Benshi – this is a series of film screenings-cum-meetings tinged with a dose of the unexpected. If you are a serious cinema-goer, join us. How can one describe Benshi? Well, when the cinema took root in Japan, the government decided to appoint a special official – a story-teller and an interpreter of film narratives. As foreign films constituted a cultural barrier for Japanese audiences, a person working as Benshi helped them understand contextual intricacies and provided any additional information that was crucial to enjoying the cinematic experience.
Lublin-based Benshi is not a single person but a communal space open to anybody wishing to discuss and debate movies. However, if you feel like remaining a listener, you are also welcome. Loving the cinema is enough. Just come to the Centre for Culture in Lublin and join us weekly. There is no advance booking or admission fee. What we crave and care about is your presence.
We have prepared a few months’ worth of films – six series of screenings and over twenty films. Join us on our mutually shared and jointly experienced cinematic adventure during each every cinema-goer and every film enthusiast will provide inspiration for each other. We intend to watch film works together, talk at length about them, playing the roles of present-day pluralized Benshis.
As before, you are invited to attend Benshi in the Centre for Culture’s Screening Room. The screenings are organized by Kinoteatr Projekt and Joanna Gładysz – PhD cultural studies candidate and a film buff.
