“Shirley Valentine” is Krystyna Janda’s one-woman show. In fact, the opening sentence of this paragraph is enough recommendation. With the exception of a short break, Janda has been playing and staging “Shirley Valentine” since the beginning of the 1990s. Over 700 performances have proved that the play constitutes both an undisputed commercial success and the unrivalled tour de force of the icon of Polish cinematography and theatre. No wonder – Janda has managed to create a charismatic and rounded on-stage personality that two generations of Polish women have identified themselves with.

The protagonist of William “Willy” Russel’s play is an American housewife who, traumatised with everyday routines and a crabby husband, attempts to turn a new leaf and completely change her the direction her life is taking. To let her hair down. To run away from the confines of her kitchen. For instance, to go on a trip to Greece. For the time being, however, she is sipping her wine and talking to herself. That is when we meet. She is not deranged nor addicted. She is just plain lonely and disappointed by the loveless life she is leading.

The play premiered years before “Desperate Housewives” made it big.
