The Polish-Lithuanian Union was an important event in the history of not only Lublin and Poland, but of the whole Europe, among others due to its peaceful, partnership and compromise nature. The Union concluded in 1569 guaranteed mutual national and religious tolerance and equal state rights in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It is an European heritage, constituting the archetype of the European Union in building a federation of states and civil societies of modern Europe. It was in Lublin already in the sixteenth century that values and ideas were emphasized, which in time served as the foundations of the European Union and Lublin and thanks to the Union of Lublin, became a peculiar source of modern Europe, a common Europe of many nations, cultures and people. Thanks to these exceptional celebrations, Lublin has the opportunity to recall its important role in shaping the European community of nations.
Celebrating this year under the slogan “From the Union of Lublin to the European Union” and showing how to derive and build the future of the European Union from the heritage and experience of the Lublin Union, we would like to recall the words of St. John Paul II.
