Xiangyang is a prefecture-level city in Hubei province, central China. It is one of the oldest Chinese cities. During the reign of Han Dynasty it was a county-level city and since the 12th century the city has been the capital of prefecture. In the 13th century Xiangyang was an important stronghold in the border area between the Southern Song and the Jurchens and, later, the Mongols. In 1950 Xinagyang was merged with the neighbouring city of Fancheng and changed its name into Xiangfan. The original name, i.e. Xiangyang, was restored on December 2, 2010. The city is now the second largest one in the province, just after its capital, i.e. the city of Wuhan. Xiangyang is the centre of food, textile and car industry.
