30th anniversary of the first fully free local elections

30th anniversary of the first fully free local elections
27.05.202014:20

A new era began in the history of Lublin 30 years ago: we gained independence together with the local governmental reform and we could decide which developmental direction to follow. Due to strenuous work and a good strategy implementation, Lublin is today one of the fastest thriving cities in Poland - says Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of Lublin.

The first fully free local elections after World War II were held on May 27, 1990. After 40 years, local self-government was restored, terminating the rule of local representatives of the communist government. At that point, the Senate of the Republic of Poland adopted a law restoring local government. Consequently, Poland began a period of transformations towards democracy, economical stabilisation and increase in the life quality. We are commemorating the 30th anniversary of these exceptional events this year.

The City of Lublin, in conjunction with other polish local governments, has been preparing for months a joint celebration of the anniversary of the of local government restoration. Unfortunately, most events cannot be held under the given conditions. The Mayor of Lublin has participated today in the debate "30 years of self-government - experience and future" organised by The Foundation in Support of Local Democracy (FSLD). The discussion was convened to mark the 30th anniversary of self-government.

Apart from The Mayor of Lublin, the debate involved:

  • Jerzy Stępień - former President of the Constitutional Tribunal,
  • Jerzy Buzek - former Prime Minister of Poland, Member of the European Parliament,
  • Adam Bodnar -  Polish Ombudsman,
  • Paweł Swianiewicz - Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw.

Additionally, an exhibition prepared jointly by the City of Lublin and Kurier Lubelski journal as part of the project "30 years have passed" will be presented in Litewski Square in mid-June.
