Unemployment – an opportunity or a threat?

The COVID-19 epidemic affects our lives drastically. Moreover, the current situation is associated with the job loss.

An unemployed person is shocked and must confront uncertainty to find himself/herself in a completely new situation. After an initial disorientation, sadness and fear, the feelings like anger, regret and disagreement may appear. Growing frustration affects a person's cognitive abilities - concentration and the ability to think properly. Conflict, aggressive behaviour as well as exhaustion with difficult emotions can appear at this dreadful time. On the other hand, the unemployed person hopes to find job position and be more energetic. If he or she does not find a job at this time, unfortunately he/she may be exposed to depression and psychosomatic disorders due to the chronic stress. Being unemployed for a long time is also risky - addiction and suicidal thoughts may appear.

Those emotions can make everyday life difficult. It is worth to remember that, as in any difficult situation, emotions are not something constant, they change over time. However, you can use psychological consultation to deal with difficulties faster and to be able to act effectively. The psychologist will help to understand and accept emerging emotions, develop awareness of strengths, and will help in determining new goals.

If you are struggling with a mental problem, do not hesitate to seek advice of a specialist. More information in the Psychological help and assistance tab in the Coronavirus Practical Information section.
