“Lublin is a good and stable basketball centre. The actions and cooperation of the city, university and the Polish Basketball Federation made AZS Lublin successful,” says Grzegorz Bachański, President of the Polish Basketball Federation.

„The Polish Basketball Federation has great development strategies for this sport. It gives Lublin a chance for an even higher basketball level. Almost 3 weeks ago, we announced that our male basketball players were promoted to the Ekstraklasa [1st Division], and today, we can talk about the return of female basketball in the Lublin region,” rejoiced Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of the City of Lublin.

The female Ekstraklasa returned to the Lublin region after nine years. The Lublin team called AZS Lublin was promoted to the Ekstraklasa in the 1978/1979 season where they had been playing for a year. It wasn’t until 2000 that supporters could witness their next promotion. The then AZS Meblotap Lublin, with Iwona Goduła from the national team, was performing for seven seasons.

Today, AZS UMCS Lublin refers to a beautiful tradition and builds a training pyramid in Lublin, culmination of which is its second team playing in the 1st Women’s Basketball League of the Polish Basketball Federation. Thanks to this, young and prospective players from Lublin and students of MCSU, who represent the university in Academic Championships of Poland and, in the future, in the Universiade, will get the chance to develop themselves.

“University should be a complex institution providing not only didactics and science, but also culture and sport. And nowadays, in Lublin, there are good conditions and time for academic sport. During the term of Mayor Krzysztof Żuk, the city has supported the development of basketball and other sports disciplines,” says prof. Stanisław Michałowski, the Rector of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

The sports club has elaborated a very ambitious training programme for the youth. It assumes that with cooperation of Lublin authorities and schools head teachers, sports and profiled classes will be created in 11 primary schools and 4 gimnazjums [lower secondary schools] where talented pupils will be trained to eventually become members of AZS UMCS Lublin. This is the first time that such a complex training programme for children and youth has been elaborated within the sport development strategy in force.

“Lublin and Wrocław are the only cities in Poland where the “Sportowe szkoły” [Sports schools] programme is implemented. Sports clubs can use the school facilities, which is a vital element while producing sport results,” rejoiced Marek Lembrych, President of the Lublin Basketball Association expressed his satisfaction.

Krzysztof Szewczyk, one of the best coaches of the young generation, assistant coach of female national team and ex-coach of CCC Polkowice, will lead the team. Szewczyk and
the Management Board have already started completing the staff and team which will represent our city in the professional league. At that moment, the coach is participating in the national team grouping where he assists Jacek Winnicki in preparations to the fight for a promotion to EuroBasket 2015 and the Olimpic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
