Starting today you can sign up for traditional craft workshops that will be held during the Jagiellonian fair. The list of workshops includes a straw weaving workshop as well as workshops on making spirit dolls and painting wooden birds. You can also learn to sing Belarussian songs and dance the Obertas.

The workshops are for a limited number of participants. 

You can sign up for the following workshops:


Traditional Signing for Females: Belarussian Calendar Songs and Processions 
Dates: 14 August 1 pm-4 pm, 15-16 August 11 am-2 pm 
Place: Workshops of Culture (ul. Grodzka 5a)
The workshop is devoted to archaic singing styles from different regions of Belarus. The participants will learn annual calendar songs and techniques of singing in motion during processions. Instructor: Irina Mazyuk. 
The participants must by 15 years and older. 

Traditional Signing for Males: Songs from Western and Central Polesie 
Date: 14 August 4pm-7pm, 15-16 August 2pm-5pm
Place: Workshops of Culture (ul. Grodzka 5a)

The workshop will be led by Andriy Lyashuk from Kovel in Volhynia. He graduated from the State Institute of Culture in Rivne. He took part in numerous ethnographic expeditions in West Polesie and Volhynia. Interested in playing and making folk instruments for years, he founded in 2008 a project Etnoground to promote folk art. The participants must be 18 years and older. 

Traditional Polish Dances in Non-Stylized Forms 
Date:14 August 4pm-7pm, 15-16 August 1pm-4pm
Place: Square at Andersen Theatre (ul. Dominikańska 1)
The participants will learn dances based on mazurka and polka rhythms from different parts of Poland (including the Lublin region) as well as elements connected with these dances to help them acquire spontaneity in dancing.

Workshop on Making Spirit Dolls
Date: 14-15 August, 3pm-5pm
Place: Lublin Castle Greens
The workshop is led by a young artist from Lviv, Tsvitana Mezheva. Her first spirit doll was made by her grandmother who continued old Ukrainian traditions. She creates her dolls using traditional materials: hay, pieces of fabric and colour threads.

Decorative Art from the Kurpie Region
Date: 14-15 August, 4pm-6pm
Place: Gallery of the Folk Artists Association (ul. Grodzka 14)

Czesława Kaczyńska is one of the most popular and renowned folk artists from the Kurpie region. Her paper cut-outs are marked by her individual style. In Lublin, she will share her knowledge with the workshop participants. In addition, you will learn how to weave straw flowers, how to make traditional stamps and colourful paper cut-outs from Łowicz or decorate wooden birds. The participants will create their own toys from cloth and rags; they will also learn how to paint on glass and weave traditional Belarussian belts. There are still places available for the workshop on making folk decorations at the Summer School of Traditional Handicraft. The classes will be led by artisans from different parts of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. Those who decide not to sign up for the workshop can take part in open meeting with artists, where they will learn the arcana of herbal healing and or try their hand at churning.
