Kalinka
05.08.201408:28

The workshops of Culture invite all Lublin’s residents, particularly individuals connected with the Kalinowszczyzna district, to partake in a creative project titled Kalinka. Based on the recollections of a once existing meeting place named Kalinka and stories which the Kalinowszczyzna district's residents decided to share with us, we wish to create a place for contemplation, rest and dialogue. To this end, one of the LSS project’s residing artists invites you to take part in creating public space. We encourage you to share with us your memories and fantasies which could then be expressed as ceramic compositions, and become a permanent element of this space. The project is authored and run by Gabriela Pienias. The artist will work in the city’s open space, right next to the premises of the Narnia Community Centre (12 Lwowska St.), Monday to Friday, starting July 21, 2014, between 2 PM and 8 PM. We look forward to seeing you and hearing your ideas and stories connected with the Kalinowszczyzna district and cafe Kalinka! Project’s finale: 9 August 2014 (Saturday), 7:30 p.m., Narnia Community Centre For more information contact Ms. Justyna Sołtys: phone: 693 270 588; e-mail: justyna.m.soltys@gmail.com The Kalinka Project is part of the international art residencies programme Laboratorium Sztuki Społecznej (LSS). About the project: Referring to gardens and orchards of single-storey family houses which could be found in Kalinowszczyzna until the 1970s, the artist will create a place for rest, contemplation and relaxation, engaging the residents in the process. The assumption of the projects is to blur the line between the private and the public – some household items and home furnishing will be located outside, among large residential units. Using the technique of mosaic-making, the artist will invite local residents to participate in the creation of tiling and building furniture. The project will activate the local community, giving the residents an opportunity to have a real impact on the visual site and character of the district and some parts of its area. By building small urban architecture, the artist will create a place for meetings, dialogue and exchange of memories and stories connected with the district. The artist derived the title of the project from a place that no longer exists – the Kalinka café, which is often recalled by the district’s residents. Gabriela Pienias (Poland) is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cieszyn; currently a Ph.D. student with Cieszyn’s Institute of Fine Arts. She also studied painting at the University of Lisbon. She organized Cieszyn’s Venice Biennale and Meetings of Art in Cieszyn Venice. The artists creates large-format painting installations and realist pictures on social themes, whose target place of presentation is the city’s public space. The openings of her works also take place there. She introduces painting into the urban tissue as a foreign and unexpected element which constitutes both the opposition to omnipresent advertisements and a starting point for the creation of a place for holding meetings and a dialogue with other people. Through her artistic interventions and actions so far carried out in Poland and Portugal, she tames both the art and the city. Pointing to some social problems, she encourages a debate on real problems of today’s world and reflection on the condition of contemporary art. The LSS Residencies programme is part of the East of Culture project organised by creative communities and local governments of Eastern Poland with the support from the Ministry Of Culture And National Heritage and the National Centre for Culture. The project is supported by Nataša - The Eastern Partnership Civil Society Platform for Culture.
