Magic Lantern is an educational project that has successfully been operating for 21 years in Switzerland (over 70 Magic Lantern clubs) and 17 other countries all over the world. The project is for children aged 6 to 12 (elementary school pupils). Its purpose is to help children discover the history, techniques, aesthetics and pleasures of cinema. The audiovisual media are the most popular means of communication these days. Be it on the internet, the cell phone or via video games, more and more information is communicated by means of images. This process can particularly be observed among the youngest generation, for which this way of communicating is the basic cognitive tool. Nonetheless, the contemporary school still dwells upon traditional means of communication, not putting enough emphasis on preparing pupils for understanding the visual media, whereas parents lack necessary tools to bolster the non-formal education of their children in this regard. As a result, children are exposed to a deluge of images they cannot understand. The project aims to address these problems. Its main objective is to help children discover the cinema as an attractive form of art, with the emphasis put on helping young spectators get a taste of emotions that are evoked when watching a film on the big screen. The Magic Lantern programme will provide children with the tools necessary for understanding (decoding) the images they see. In this way, children will develop a discriminating eye for audiovisual arts and multimedia messages, an absolutely essential skill these days. At the same time, children will also become active and conscious creators of such messages. How can you join the club? On enrolment, girls and boys aged 6 to 12 will get a free membership card. The Magic Lantern project has over 100 clubs all over the world, operating at schools, film festivals and on the internet. Lublin’s Magic Lantern Club will be established at the Workshops of Culture (ul Grodzka 5a), where – starting September – children can take part in free film screenings. The enrolment to the club begins on June 8, 2014. The Magic Lantern Club membership entitles boys and girls aged 6 to 12 to take part in all screenings held September through December as scheduled in the club’s programme. ENROLMENT FORM
