Music Workshop with the SzaZaZe Project

Music Workshop with the SzaZaZe Project
23.10.201316:49

Culture Workshops in Lublin organize a music workshop with the SzaZaZe group as part of the Miasto Movie project.
The workshop is for anyone interested in sound, predominantly its dramatic function in the cinema, theatre or dance. You do not have to be a musician to take part in the workshop. No ability to play any musical instrument is necessary, either. Participants-musicians are, however, asked to bring their own instruments.
Conducted by members of the SzaZaZe project from Warsaw, the workshop will mainly deal with problems of music considered in an interdisciplinary context. Numerous experiences gained by the artists in the field of theater, film and dance music will allow them to introduce workshop participants to the arcana of composing, helping them get to know the technical background and methods for creating “music in a context.” The workshop will have the form of a lecture supported by specific musical examples and interactive collaboration with participants in composing and creating music. As for music written for films, the musicians will share their experiences gained during the collaboration with the National Film Archive, Film School in Łódź or Semafor Animation Studios, e.g. Polański/SzaZa, Starewicz/SzaZa and Themerson/SzaZaZe. With active involvement of workshop participants, the artists will raise problems such as narration in films, music commentary, counterpoint or illustrating particular scenes with sound. Referring to live examples, Szamburski, Zakrocki and Zemler will demonstrate various functions and potentials of music in films, discussing composition methods, as well. Together with workshop participants, the artists will interpret film scenes in a number of ways, illustrating them with sound to impart them with humorous, serious, dramatic or illustrative overtones. Films presented at the workshop will include silent films (Starewicz, Melieux), experimental films (Themerson), first stop motion animation (Władysław Starewicz) and modern cinema (film-school exercises by Roman Polański). Discussion and music presentation: Paweł Szamburski, Patryk Zakrocki and Hubert Zemler will talk about their experiences gained when collaborating with artists, directors and choreographers such as Piotr Cieplak, Paweł Miśkiewicz, Leszek Bzdyl, Krzysztof Globisz, Marcin Gokieli, as well Pracownia Fizyczna in Łódź or Montownia Theatre. Depending on the expectations of participants, the workshop will cover the following issues: Music and text in the theatre / Music and theatrical performance without text / Music in contemporary dance / Music in the silent cinema / Music and performing arts / Szamburski / Zakrocki / Zemler will also introduce workshop participants to the problem of improvisation in both music and creative act; strong and weak sides of improvisation and ways it can be useful when working with other arts disciplines will be discussed. The artists will also discuss points shared by music and other disciplines regarding creation time, free improvisation or creative acts. Musicians will reveal what brings them fulfillment when they are involved with theater work; they will also reveal when and why theatre work may become a limitation. Finally, the artists will present instruments and technical devices that enable composing live music fast; they will teach participants the simplest and most effective methods of composing and improvising. Workshop dates: October 26-27, 2013 /// Saturday, Oct. 26, 1 PM – 5 PM; Sunday, Oct. 27, 12 PM – 4 PM Venue: Dominican Monastery – Union Hall (ul. Złota 9) Organized by: Culture Workshops in Lublin Participation in the workshop is free of charge, but due to a limited number of places, advance registration is necessary by phoning 81 533 08 18. The workshop is co-financed by the National Centre for Culture as part of the Culture-Interventions Programme.
