700th Anniversary of Lublin. What Else Is in Store?
01.05.201706:26

"Experience the History", the second season of the Grand Jubilee of the 700th anniversary of the City of Lublin, is drawing to an end. It started with the workshops and curated tour of an exhibition "Architecture and Landscapes of Lublin on Posters" at the Krakow Gate. The season will end on April 28 at Vincent Pol Manor with a guided tour and workshops under the thematic week "Romantic Lublin." Two seasons are yet to come: "A Lot Is Going on" and "Feel the Energy."

“The season ‘Experience the History’ is about the fascinating past of Lublin presented as a gift to the inhabitants and visitors of the city on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of granting city rights to Lublin. The 700th anniversary gives us a unique chance to get to know our own cultural heritage and history. During the celebration we want to draw attention to famous Lubliners, landmark events, ideas and works,” says Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of the City of Lublin.

The idea of the season “Experience the History” was to show in an interesting and innovative way the history of the city, from its foundation to the present. Museums, cultural centres, churches, research centres and institutions dealing with Lublin reopened to the city’s inhabitants. During special, free thematic weeks, they held exhibitions presenting collections and documents related to all stages of Lublin's development.

Curators, tour guides and historians dealing with particular epochs created for the inhabitants of Lublin a great tale about the proud history of the city. We rejected the stereotypical perception of history as a space reserved exclusively for a narrow audience and experts. The programme of the season put emphasis on direct experience, the use of various forms and cognitive tools. It included a series of workshops and meetings with enthusiasts of our city.

Thanks to the season "Experience the History", we reminded the inhabitants of Lublin that the city hosted the relics of the Holy Cross; that the city has the unique Holy Trinity at Lublin Castle; that Lublin has always attracted great artists and intellectuals; that is was a home to a big and significant Jewish community; and that it provided inspiration for poets and writers.

The beneficiaries of the programme were primarily the inhabitants of Lublin, including children who could take advantage of a separate educational offer including open meetings, workshops and talks.

The inhabitants of Lublin and participants in the programme had a unique opportunity to see places related to Lublin's historical heritage, get familiar with the rich offer of the museums, learn about different periods of local history - from the beginnings of settlement, location, through the period of Lublin Renaissance, Romanticism and the Avant-Garde, to the history of the Holocaust, the time of the Solidarity movement and the formation of the democratic state.

The events were organized in cooperation with the following institutions: Lublin Cathedral, State Archives in Lublin, House of Words, Vincent Pol Manor, Lublin Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dominican Monastery in Lublin, Museum of the History of the City of Lublin, Józef Czechowicz Museum, Lublin Museum, Museum of Old Prints and Sacred Art in the Metropolitan Seminary in Lublin, Grodzka Gate - NN Theatre Centre, Piwnica pod Fortuną, Lublin Region Tourist Organization.

The "Experience the History" season included 12 thematic weeks, 180 lectures and history lessons, 4 conferences, 22 themed walks, 42 workshops for children, and 16 exhibition spaces were open. 9,500 people visited the exhibitions, took part in the workshops, history lessons, lectures and walks. 55 000 is the sum of total recipients of the season.

There are two seasons in store for us: "Feel the energy" and "A Lot is Going On"

The spring is a period of vitality and joy of life. It is the time when students go out to have fun outdoors and the Lublin cultural life begins to leave the walls of institutions. The city vibrates with students’ events, the city inhabitants go out to take part in one of the biggest cultural events in Poland–Night of Culture. It is during this period that the first festivals taking place in Lublin's streets, bridges, squares and courtyards begin.
