“Everyone knows that Paris is famous for fashion, Polesie is known for the mud and the waters are a landmark of Busko. Venice has its gondolas, Warsaw is famous for its pastries. Guess which one I prefer. It is Lublin…” – this how a song about Lublin exclusively recorded for the Night of Culture to celebrate the city’s 700th anniversary.
“A Postcard from Lublin” is a song not only with original lyrics but an amazing story too. It would not have been recorded and presented the public had it not been for an accidental meeting on the train.
Jerzy Zawisza is an 89-year-old pensioner who became famous in local media as a person inviting people to accompany him on a train journey from Warsaw to Lublin. One of the people he came across at the train station was Joanna Wawiórka-Kamieniecka, a coordinator of the Night of Culture. He told her about his love for Lublin and the memories of his childhood in Old Town. He vividly remembers joint singing and playing with his friends in a courtyard nearby 3 May Street. On the train Zawisza sang her a song he remembers very well from his childhood.
It is Lublin, from over Bystrzyca river waves,
Lublin, where concerts and balls take place every day.
Lublin, the beloved Lublin,
Is the most beautiful of all cities.
The recorded song was used to revive the piece in a new arrangement by Łukasz Jemioła, Urszula Czerniak and Tomasz Deutryk. The results of their cooperation on “A Postcard from Lublin” alongside other Łukasz Jemioła songs will be presented during the Night of Culture at Próba Cafe (Grodzka 5a, Lublin).
You can listen to the song online at nockultury.pl and on the Night of Culture’s channel on YouTube.
