One Day in the Life of Lublin
26.09.201721:43

It started at midnight, on May 19, 2017. For twenty-four hours, one-day reporters rushed all over Lublin recording everyday life, while Lubliners posted their reports in social media. And so we succeeded in documenting one day in the life of Lublin , as a part of the celebrations of the city’s 700th anniversary. What was it like? You can find out by visiting the website set up by the House of Words.

Shortly after midnight, Piotr is doing a show on the radio. Just after 1 am another Piotr, a fishing and shooting enthusiast, is on a night shift in the bakery. He says he prefers doing day shifts. Unlike Artur, a driver of a silver Volkswagen, whom the reporters meet at 4:26 am at a taxi stand. At 6:28 am Bożena is one of the few smiling people at the bus station. For Renata (whom we meet at 11:30 am) the number nineteen is happy as was born on the nineteenth. At 11:45 am, Mikołaj is having the first ice cream in his life. At 3:11 pm Dawid is on his duty in the ward of endocrinology at the hospital in Jaczewskiego Street. Just after 5 pm Krzysztof (aged 77) is waiting for a bus to Warsaw. His grandchildren live near Pruszków. Zofia (at 5:30 pm) has been living in the same place since birth, i.e., for 60 years. She always gets up in the morning because she likes it. After 6 pm a dog is barking in the Old Town, and small boys in the Bronowice district are dream of a great football career. A theater performance is starting at 7 pm, after 21:00 all restaurants and pubs in Deptak are full after 9 pm. Just before midnight some are still walking in Szafirowa Street. One ordinary day in Lublin.

The idea of the project organized by the "Grodzka Gate - NN Theater" Centre and the House of Words was to capture the image of the city and its inhabitants. The grand Jubilee of the city’s 700th anniversary was a great opportunity to do so. On May 19, equipped with cameras and microphones, volunteers set out to register 24 hours in the life of Lubliners. They prepared materials documenting the lives of streets, neighborhoods, private homes, workplaces, temples, schools and universities. They used a variety of techniques: photos, notes, videos and even comic strips. The city's sounds were recorded, too – dog barking, bugle, sounds of streets and backyard became part of the city’s image.

Anyone who was in Lublin on that day could participate in the project. It was enough to post your account on Facebook adding the hashtag # 1LienLBN. There were more than 100 of such accounts, including photographs of a coffee, pigeons, a view from the widow, a selfie, an exhibition opening and a shadow.

The participants jointly created a kind of "time capsule" of Lublin, which will also be accessible to future generations. Perhaps it will survive and will be opened by those celebrating the 800th anniversary of the city? For now, the result of the action can be found on a website specially prepared for this purpose.

The event was part of the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the City of Lublin.
