Starting from 1 August you can register for workshops that will be held during Jagiellonian Fair 2017 (12-15 August, Lublin). This year the programme includes workshops on weaving traditional Belarus belts, traditional Polish and Lithuanian dances, building shepherds’ instruments and cheese making. Apart from this, there will also be pottery workshops, workshops on traditional gingerbread decorating and Easter egg (pysanka) painting. You can register by phone at 721 958 428, Monday through Friday between 10 am and 4 pm. The workshops can hold a limited number of participants.
The Jagiellonian Fair is the largest fair in Poland showcasing work by artisans and craftsmen representing fields of handicraft based on regional design and execution techniques (e.g. wood products, pottery and ceramics, embroidery, traditional instruments, smithery, painting, plaiting, toy making, decorative are ritual arts, lace-making and weaving). Invited artists actively participate in the fair, leading demonstrations and workshops at their stands. The fair is an opportunity to get to know a given area of handicraft, talk to real enthusiasts and learn new skills.

Bogusława Miś has been practising Zalipie painting since she was a child, and Wanda Racia took it up in 1974. This family tradition was passed on them from their grandmothers They do hand-painting on Easter eggs, plates, house walls and other objects.

Józef Lasik comes from the town of Stryszawa, a well-known centre of toy-making in Poland. He had made his first works when he was 9-10 years old, but it was not until he turned 23 that he took up sculpturing for good. He creates wooden toys and sculptures.

Alicja Matczak’s speciality is ritual and decorative art. She has been active since she was 10. She drew her first patterns from her mother Józefa Matejczyk. She makes crepe paper flowers, pająki(spider-like chandelier decorations), paper cut-outs as well as pysanky, Christmas tree ornaments and wreaths characteristic of Łowicz region wedding ceremony. Alicja has taken part in many individual and collective exhibitions as well as in contests and festivals at which she has won many awards and distinctions. She is a member of Folk Artists’ Association.

Family Ecological Farm FIGA became a certified organic farm in 2002. It is run by the Maziejuk family: Waldemar, Tomasz and Wawrzyniec. They focus on goat breeding and processing goat milk. They specialise in making goat cheese using traditional methods from the Podkarpacie region that date back to the 15th century. They have won many awards and distinctions.

Nataliia Kananovich has been dealing with weaving for over 30 years. Her work is based on the designs of Eastern Belarus. She uses natural materials. She creates belts and clothing with elements of weaving and traditional embroidery. She is a member of the Belarusian Association of Folk Artists. She holds the honorary title of Master of Artistic Crafts of Belarus.

Piotr Zgorzelski is the author and creator of the Traditional Dance Program on YouTube and the Traditional Dance Portal on the website of the Institute of Music and Dance. He is a co-founder of the Warsaw Association " House of Dance."

White singing, also known as natural singing, is an archaic vocal technique typical of traditional cultures of Central and Eastern Europe. It has survived till this day, although to a very small extent, even in the Polish countryside. Ancient ritual, dance, lyrical and religious songs revive and genuinely glow when performed by white singing, just as hundreds of years ago. The workshop is designed for people who have already had contact with this kind of singing as well as for beginners; both women and men. The programme includes work with the body (singing technique), respiratory exercises, work on the flexibility of the voice apparatus, opening the larynx and resonating the resonators. The classes will also focus on the repertoire, primarily from the Lublin region, where the participants will have the opportunity to learn "from the source" and from archival recordings and music scores. The programme also includes the learning of ritual songs, especially wedding, lyrical, dance, religious, ballads and lullabies.

Przemysław Ficek creates hand-made folk instruments characteristic of Beskid Żywiecki. The instruments are made from fruit trees or elderberry tree. He is a self-taught artist and has been making these instruments since 2009. He was awarded the first prize in instrument construction competition in 2012 for Żywiec bagpipes.

Marta Urban-Burdalski is a psychologist and enthusiast of traditional music. She works with children and adults. She is a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. She co-created the Traveling Violin Collective, an initiative bringing together practitioners and researchers of traditional Polish music.
Katarzyna Zedel is a musician, ethnomusicologist, teacher, enthusiast of Gregorian chant and traditional music. A former student of folk musicians from the Radom region, among others, Jan Gaca, Jan Adamczyk, Jan Fokt and Wiesława Gromadzka, and from the Lublin region: Stanisław Głaza, Leon Krzos and Zbigniew Butryn. Leader of two ensembles: Zdrowie Pięknych Pań and Katarzynki (until 2014).

Malgorzata Barnat became a folk artist in 2002, and the skills were passed on to her by her mother and Maria Petyk from Inowrocław. He does wax writing, makes traditional Kujawy region pysanky using layering technique, and creates crepe flowers. Since 1999, she has been a recipient of the Marshal of Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship award for her work. She is a holder of about 50 different awards and honorary distinctions for embroidery and pysanky.

Oleksandr Bryndikov is a young artist from Lviv who creates traditional religious woodcuts, mainly with saints. He colours woodcut prints and beautifully decorates frames for his works. He has been in handicraft business for nearly 10 years. He works in the National Museum in Lviv. In 2012 he received an award from the Minister of Culture of Ukraine. Odarka Bordun also does stamping and, together with Oleksandr, creates works inspired by folk art.

Tomasz has been engaged in decorative and ceremonial arts for about 5 years. He draws inspiration from elderly people in the municipality, from literature and from the ethnography section of Lublin Castle Museum, as well as cultivating the traditions of his grandparents. He creates crepe-paper flowers, straw spider-like chandelier decorations, straw hats, and blown-egg pysanky. At the workshop participants will learn how to make traditional pysanky from the Lublin region.

This is an invitation to joint music making, aimed at lovers of traditional music in a non-stylized form. Each workshop day will be summed up having the participants play at evening fairy dances. The workshop (rehearsals) will be devoted to the study of a particular repertoire, which will be played at the dance parties by a representative line-up of the Orchestra. The teaching will be done by direct communication (playing by ear). The workshop is for persons wishing to develop their skills and musical passions who can play (at least at intermediate level) such instruments as violin, bass and / or cello, double bass, viola, hornbill (and / or barbican), clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, flute, accordion.

Folk ensemble Pulkelis was founded in 2000. The ensemble performs the musical characteristic of Aukstaitija (Upland) region. Most of the instruments they use were made by the ensemble’s leader, Albertas Bartasiu. At the workshop participants will learn traditional Lithuanian dances.

Sisters Nataliia and Tetyana Katrychenko have been creating motanka dolls since 2009. They have been sewing for 20 years. They only use traditional materials, embroidering them only by hand using more than fifty different techniques. They have taken part in many exhibitions and fairs in Ukraine and Turkey. Winners of numerous awards and honorary distinctions. At the workshop you will learn how to make motanka dolls.

Stamping in modern form. Using stamps inspired by skirt designs - paintings from Hrubieszów, Tomaszów and Zamość costumes, as well as patterns decorating Easter eggs (windmills, pathways, plant motifs), participants will decorate T-shirts, bags and all fabrics. Permanent fabric paint will leave marks of traditions, leaving you richer in knowledge of regional costumes and ornaments. Participants should bring their own fabrics for stamping (cotton t-shirts, linen / linen bags, pillow cases).

Among the traditional forms of cut-outs, the wheel set is particularly popular. It occurs in innumerable variations, from economical, monochrome to very complex and multi-coloured. During the workshop the participants will create a joint composition resembling a cut-out. Instead of the intimate cutting of a piece of paper, we jointly create a work made by chalk – a fleeting, short-lived work. The workshop will not only show the beauty of traditional form, but will also showcase the magic of chalk drawing.
About Jagiellonian Fair
What distinguishes the Jagiellonian Fair from other similar events is that you cannot buy commercial space for the event. The organizers themselves invite selected artists from Poland and abroad to showcase their craft and traditions. Each year during the Jagiellonian Fair, every invited artisan is subject to a substantive evaluation by the selection board. As a result, the quality of products presented at the festival can be strictly controlled and become higher and higher year by year.
The Jagiellonian Fair refers to old fairs when it was possible to purchase products from exhibitors from all over Europe. Today the organizers cooperate with foreign centres of folk artists from Central and Eastern Europe, which allows them to invite interesting and well-known artists. Every day of the fair we can see products from more than 250 artisans and folk artists. The program also includes numerous concerts of traditional music, exhibitions, performances, shows, workshops, traditional games and plays backyard, and night dances.

In 2017 Lublin is celebrating its grand jubilee of the 700th anniversary. In this extraordinary year, we want to get inspiration from our heritage, strengthen our sense of pride in Lublin, and develop the city for future generations.
