The Night of Culture 2010 is dedicated to Lublin's historical heritage

The events of this year's edition of the Night of Culture will be taking place, most of all., in the city's historical areas.
This year we invite you to plunge into more intimate places, to go off the beaten track and to discover the urban beauty which evades us in the hustle and bustle of every day life. Exploring the nooks and crannies ofLublin will present a unique occasion for an intimate encounter not only with the City but also with art. It will be occasion to abolish the barriers between the artists and the viewer, modernity and history. The artists are inviting you into magic backyards, streets less travelled, gates and secret passages of the Old Town Very few of us are aware that the Lublin Old Town, as well as a part of the city centre, has been recognized as a historical monument. The historic character of our city has also been acknowledged by the European Union, which has given our city the European Heritage Label. The list of European Heritage Labels includes places which are important landmarks of culture and European identity, such as the Acropolis, the Berlin Wall, and in Poland- the Gniezno Cathedral, the Wawel Cathedral, the Gdansk Shipyard, the Lublin City. In Lublin, the European Heritage Label includes three monuments connected with the Polish-Lithuanian Union of 1569, also known as the Lublin Union: The Holy Trinity Chapel in the Lublin Castle, Basilica of St. Stanislaus and Dominican Monastery. Thus Lublin has been acknowledged as a symbol of European ideas of integration, the supranational heritage of democracy and tolerance and of the dialogue between the East and West. The Lublin Union may be well called the prototype of European Union, well-captured by the phrase: “From the Lublin Union to the European Union” Download program of the Night of Culture
