The Night of Culture 2011
02.06.201114:58

This unique in Poland event will take place on June 4 and it will encompass the entire city. It’s a celebration in which the principal stage is made up by the urban public space, while the roles are played not only by the artists, but also the spectators themselves. The Magician will be the king to this urban carnival – a tight rope walker and actor – the most famous citizen of Lublin, an eponymous character of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s novel, as of now translated into more than a hundred languages. The Magician is a jester and yet master of ceremony, changing his attires and faces, a guide to thousands of participants who will pour out onto the streets to celebrate until dawn, arm in arm with the artists, carried away by the spirit of the ‘world turned upside down’.
During The Night of Culture Lublin will be taken over by actors, musicians, street buskers, multimedia artists, dancers, performers, painters, photographers and writers. The city squares and courtyards as well as numerous cultural institutions, concert halls, theatres, museums, galleries, community centres will open their doors for public offering numerous special attractions and free admission to all the events. Also Lublin’s districts will be a witness to a myriad a of cultural actions demonstrating the power of the neighborhood community. In our very special programme of The Night of Culture Eve we want to show the potential locked in Lublin’s districts. During this one night we long to disenchant these ‘urban bedrooms’ and turn them into places vibrating with culture. The Night of Culture is made up by hundreds of artistic events scattered around the city streets, professionals performing on par with laymen without any remuneration, and, what’s most important, more than a hundred thousand participants each year. It is also a demonstration of the enormous cultural potential of Lublin, a unique socio-cultural event encompassing more than 250 activities from all fields of art. This year’s Night of Culture will be a demonstration of the underlying idea of Lublin’s application to The European Capital of Culture 2016 title – ‘A City in Dialogue’. It perfectly reflects the desire of Lublin’s residents to strengthen the interpersonal bonds by cultural activity, at the same time drawing on the rich tradition of dialogue, to which the contemporary city is now bringing back the continuity – by memory, education and art.
