As we can see from the alarming statistics, the numbers of readers in Poland are continuously falling. This process is in fact speeding up. On the other hand, we have always read less than the Germans, French, Spanish or Scandinavians. We have always thought that, even though Polish economy is slower and people poorer, our culture is something we can be proud of. It’s high time to look the truth in the eye and admit that we have only been fooling ourselves. Is the heritage of the communism haunting us causing the society get rid of any cultural aspirations? Does this problem exist in all post-communist countries? We know, however, that the Czechs read more than we do. It seems that richer societies read more, but we, as we get richer, are more likely to forget about literature.
