Miasto movie - "A Single Man"
“Samotny mężczyzna”/”A Single Man” , directed by Tom Ford, running time: 99’, 2009.

“A Single Man” – when visionary fashion designer and trendsetter Tom Ford decided to make his film debut art critics were initially rather sceptical and reserved. Many of them considered Ford’s idea a mere folly, a vacuous gesture that would at best give rise to eye candy, to vapid filmic confectionery. To their surprise, however, Ford managed to prove them wrong by creating one of the best and most poignant dramas of the decade. He made the best of what he has made his name for, which is his elegant, refined style and sense of the dramatic, adding to the already stylishly and emotionally impressive mix a well written narrative based on Christopher Isherwood’s book. George, the title man, is a university professor unable to cope with the death of his closest friend, and as a result delving frenetically into melancholy and depression. The protagonist is subtly depicted on-screen by Colin Firth, who adds to the highest echelons of his professional achievements. He masterfully does George’s emotional state justice. His nuanced and understated gestures, evocative facial mannerisms and the whole gamut of complexities are all integral ingredients of his accordingly controlled, restrained and ground-breaking role. His performance garnered very positive reviews, among others it was praised and critically acclaimed during the Venice Film Festival. His on-screen presence is given further gravitas by the support of the ensemble cast, featuring marvellous Julianne Moore and young Nicholas Hoult (one of the great hopes of present-day Hollywood). Ford’s film, not unlike his fashion, has meticulously executed visuals: each detail, every element of clothing, every piece of interior design or prop is critical to the end product, to this unparalleled cinematic composition. “A Single Man” is proof positive that the cinema has received a considerable boost as Ford is a new, intriguing film artist with his own vision and style.
