„Nō – Living Classic” 能 — 生きている古典
A performance of traditional Japanese nō theatre, played by the Tokio-based Hana Itsutsu Theatre, under the direction of Master Kanji Shimizu, featuring:
Kanji Shimizu – shite actor, Kanze school, member of the Tessenkai Theatre
Takao Nishimura – shite actor, Kanze school, member of the Tessenkai Theatre
Hirokazu Kakihara – hayashikata musician, Takayasu school, otsuzumi drum
Naoya Toriyama – hayashikata musician, Kanze school, kotsuzumi drum
Manabu Takeichi – hayashikata musician, Fujita school, nōkan flute

„Nō – Living Classic” consists of selected fragments of two classic nō theatre plays, namely, „Izutsu” („A Well”) and „Tenko” („A Heavenly Drum”), which are believed to have been authored by Zeami Motokiyo (1363?-1443?). The artists will also present shorter stage forms, representative of the wide spectrum of the nō theatre. These will include maibayashi (literally, „dance and music”), in which the principal shite actor, accompanied by music and vocal parts sang by a choir, performs a dance, as well as shimai dancing selected out of nō plays, during which the shite actor performs a dance accompanied only by choral singing. The programme is complemented by a concert of traditional nō theatre music, performed by hayashikata musicians.
