Motyl i skafander (Le Scaphandre et le papillon) is a real-life story of Jean Dominic Bauby, an editor-in-chief of Elle, journalist and celebrity who at the age of 43 suffers from stroke, as a result of which his almost entire body becomes forever paralysed.
The film features a brilliant on-screen performance of Mathieu Amalric and Emanuele Seigner, shot beautifully by Janusz Kamiński and directed with style and expertise by Julian Schnabel, a filmmaker noted for his documentaries, among others on Jean Michel Basquiat and Lou Reed. Driven by empathy and a sense of narration, Schnabel focuses on the unique relationship between the main protagonist and his therapist, who – in the course of their meetings – notes down Jean Dominic’s memories, as well as on their unusual means of communication.
