Critically acclaimed and considered the father of Polish opera, Stanisław Moniuszko was the most renowned Polish composer of songs. According to historian and critic Zdzisław Jachimecki, Moniuszko composed 267 songs; other sources mention over 300 compositions by Moniuszko.
Moniuszko primarily composed songs that he arranged to fit the lyrics based on or taken from poems by Polish top writers, many of them his contemporaries, such as Adam Mickiewicz, Aleksander Chodźka, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Władysław Syrokomla (also known as Ludwik Kondratowicz), Jan Czeczot, Teofil Lenartowicz, Józefa Korzeniowski. Infrequently, he also used poems of French, German and English writers. Working on a folk-centric artistic creed, Moniuszko often alluded in his output to Polish rural cultures, referencing characteristic musical twists and drawing on the rhythms of folk dances, primarily of Polonaise, Mazurka and Krakowiak.
