24 January 2015 marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Prof. Władysław Panas (28.03.1947-24.01.2005). To commemorate this, the Workshops of Culture in Lublin prepared a new, Polish-English edition of ”The Eye of the Tzaddik.” The book will premiere on 10 February in the Hades Szeroka restaurant.

Władysław Panas was born on 28 March 1947 in Dębica near Kołobrzeg. He studied and worked at the Catholic University of Lublin. He was a professor, theorist and historian of literature as well as an outstanding researcher of the works of Bruno Schulz and Józef Czechowicz and of the Jewish tradition in Polish literature and culture. He moved to Lublin during his student years. At first, he perceived Lublin as a provincial town which he did not choose of his own free will. However, 25 years later, he was known to have said that the city he lived in was magical.

Panas saw Lublin as a City-Book, just like Dostoyevsky perceived Petersburg and Franz Kafka – Prague. He planned to write an alternative guide to Lublin to present the magical singularity of this city and reveal its hidden aura and atmosphere. Unfortunately, he only managed to write four chapters (themes) of this work. ”The Eye of the Tzaddik” is one of these chapters; it is the main theme of the work and the only one to be published as a book in Professor Panas’ lifetime. (Wydawnictwo UMCS 2004, First edition: Kresy, 1999). On the tenth death anniversary of Prof. Panas, the Workshops of Culture in Lublin prepared a new, edition of this book. Published in two languages (Polish hand English), the book is illustrated with interesting images which juxtapose the Lublin of the past with the city today.

On Tuesday, 10 February at 6 p.m., the Hades Szeroka restaurant will hold an event to promote “The Eye of the Tzaddik.” The invited guests include the family of the late Professor Panas, Prof. Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska (Department of Applied Linguistics, Maria Curie Skłodowska University), Prof. Andrzej Tyszczyk, (Head of the Institute of Polish Philology at the Catholic University of Lublin) Prof. Jan Hudzik (Head of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology at Maria Curie Skłodowska University), Ewa Zarzycka (artist from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław), Wiera Meniok, PhD (State Pedagogical University of Drohobych, Ukraine), and Grzegorz Józefczuk (Bruno Schulz Festival Association).
