On Saturday, 28 February, the Workshops of Culture will open an exhibition entitled "Ryszard Kapuściński – Africa." The exhibition shows photographs taken by the writer during his numerous journeys across Africa. The renowned reporter lived there for several years when he worked as correspondent for the Polish Press Agency. The photographs reveal his fascination with the Black Continent. The displayed photographs were not used to illustrate his books; rather, they complemented his artistic vision.

The displayed photographs have one thing in common: they all talk about people. The exhibition shows the witnesses of Kapuściński's journeys across Africa in different settings: at work, at home, surrounded by their families, in social situations as well as when they are close to God and nature.

Ryszard Kapuściński said that when he looked at the world through the viewfinder, he selected frames and composed images consciously, thinking about the outcome of choosing one motif over another.

The 26 photographs displayed in Lublin make part of a bigger exhibition entitled ”People I Met. Photographs From Africa” (”Ludzie, których spotkałem. Fotografie z Afryki”). They were selected from thousands of photos by Izabela Wojciechowska, who looks after the photographic legacy of Ryszard Kapuściński.

The opening event will be followed by a meeting featuring Ryszard Kapuściński's wife, Alicja, acknowledged reporter and the late writer’s friend Mirosław Ikonowicz, photographer Tomek Sikora and Fr. Tomasz Dostatni, OP.

The exhibition also includes the presentation of an album with 26 African fairly tales which are illustrated with photographs of children taken by Ryszard Kapuściński.

Kapuściński selected these photographs himself to illustrate fairy tales from the African countries he had visited. The fairy tales in this book were collected by Anna Kalewska, and translated and edited by philologists from the Oriental Institute and the Institute of Iberian and Iberoamerican Studies at Warsaw University. The publication is provided with an afterword written by Eugeniusz Rzewuski, PhD, who supervised the publication.
