The opera’s plot takes us to the Paris (and its vicinity) of the latter half of the 19th century. It tells a story of courtesan Violetta Valery with whom young poet Alfred Germont falls in love. Tempted by the dream of spending the rest of her life alongside handsome Alfred, Violetta decides to abandon her mighty patron Barone Douphol, leave a grand ball behind her, and start her life anew in the countryside – in a rural mansion where she hopes to lead a pastoral life.
However, the woman’s medical condition soon deteriorates. So does her economic condition. Alarmed by Violetta - her sister, Alfred goes to Paris to obtain some money. During his absence, his father pays the ex-courtesan a visit, aiming to make her change her mind and convince to leave Alfred as their relationship is a misalliance likely to put his sister’s marital plans in jeopardy. Eventually, Violetta agrees to leave for Paris and return to her former life. Alfred tries to track her down, finally confronting Violetta and Douphol at a ball in the capital of France. A scandal ensues …
The libretto of "La Traviata" was written by F. M. Piave on the basis of Alexander Dumas’ "La dame aux camèlias" and as such constitutes one of the most interesting and most intellectually impressive librettos in the history of world opera. “La Traviata” is universally acknowledged to be Verdi’s most accomplished creation. Here, music is merged perfectly with the emotional minimalism evoked by the artists on stage.
