Paul Abraham’s Ball at the Savoy is an operetta in three acts with a libretto written in compliance with the best formula developed by genius of the genre such as Strauss, Kalman and Lehar.
The production is a love story portraying the tendency of the interwar period elites to break free from the Victorian morality, naturally served in a brilliantly synthetic sauce. In this revue and deliciously arranged operetta, a representative of the elites frantically enjoying themselves on the threshold of twilight of the gods fraternizes with a son of the Orient, while a very talented artist turns out to be a female artist and makes a public coming out at a big ball at the Savoy Hotel!
This operetta was already staged twice by our theater (in 1962 and 1989), and each time he production enjoyed an amazing popularity. This was primarily due to music, which allows us to define "Ball at the Savoy" as a truly musical-like operetta. It was the composer Paul Abraham who imported jazz to the great European stages in the 1930s. Another advantage of the work is the breath-taking, impressive number of dances characteristic of the interwar period (foxtrot, shimmy, tango, slow fox), and their spectacular choreography.
"Ball at the Savoy" is beautiful and magnetizing at the same time, and the topics highlighted in this production will certainly engage the minds in a broad public discourse. This is the third staging of this title by the Music Theatre in Lublin. The previous ones were produced by Xenia Grey (1962) and Richard Zarewicz (1989 ).
