Dominic Miller is one of the most popular rock and jazz guitarists in the world, composer and music producer. Since 1990 he has been guitarist with Sting's band; he is a co-composer of Sting’s hit song 'Shape of My Heart.' He also collaborated with artists such as Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Rod Stewart, Pat Metheny, Youssou N'Dour, Chris Botti, Mariza and Peter Gabriel.
Dominic Miller was born in Argentina, grew up in the USA and now lives in France, although for the last three decades he has travelled round the world many times performing with Sting and other renowned musicians. Not surprisingly, his solo album, Silent Light (released on the iconic jazz ECM), is a blend of sounds from all over the world, from Latin American inspirations in ‘Baden,’ a piece dedicated to Brazilian guitarist and composer Baden Powell, and sounds echoing the atmosphere of the early twentieth century Paris in ‘Le Pont,’ to Celtic notes in ‘Valium.’ Sting's spirit pervades the album in a soft version of the instrumental ballad, Fields of Gold.
The material for the album was composed during bike rides around Provence, where the artist currently lives. Most pieces are performed solo by Miller, in some Miles Bould added a few percussive shots to match their mood. In the pieces without Bould’s accompaniment, Dominic Miller creates percussion effects himself by sliding rhythmically with his fingers on the strings and the resonance box. Most of the repertoire is in a melancholic mood, associated with the ballads performed by Sting. The exception is energetic rock piece ‘Chaos Theory’ which features a bass guitar.
Commenting on his friend’s latest album, Sting said: "Whenever Dominic plays the guitar, he creates a palette of colours, a wide spectrum of emotions, a sound architecture founded on both silence and its opposite. He can move the soul to the upper realms."
