Although its premiere in Venice in 1853 was one of the most spectacular failures in the history of opera, today "La traviata" enjoys extreme popularity. Despite the fact that Verdi tried to tone down the message of the original work (Alexander Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias), the audience could not accept two things: that the courtesan as a positive character on the operatic stage and that the plot was set in contemporary times. And yet the role of Violetta Valéry (the title 'traviata' means the lost one, the one who has strayed) became the crowning role of the greatest sopranos, while the melodious and touching work became a hit of the operatic repertoire. Michael Mayer’s production of "La traviata" under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin features Diana Damrau and Juan Diego Flórez as the couple of unhappy lovers.
