The Lublin City Office, the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures and the Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre Centre invite you to the opening of a photography exhibition, Lublin 1939-1944. The exhibition will be on display until October 16, 2018.

The period of World War II is the most tragic chapter in the history of Lublin. Over a few years, the city irretrievably lost both its multicultural character and identity. The exhibition shows photographs of the city and private photos taken during the war. Events were documented since the first days of September 1939. The images of the city’s destruction after bombing which seriously damaged the historical tissue of Lublin are juxtaposed with the documentation of everyday life under the Nazi occupation. The most tragic event that took place at that time was the extermination of the Jewish population living in the city. Besides recording life in the ghetto, the photographers documented the ruins of Podzamcze and the emptiness in the place of the pre-war Jewish quarter. The exhibition of Lublin in World War II also includes photographs documenting the stay of German soldiers and Third Reich’s officials in the city from their private archives.
