Title: Tartuffe
Written by: Molière
Original title: Tartuffe ou l'Imposteur
Translated by: Bohdan Korzeniewski
Molière's "Tartuffe" owes its fame to artistic values but also to the scandal caused by the mocking of religious hypocrisy in seventeenth-century France.
Remigiusz Brzyk takes on "Tartuffe" and, together with his creative team, he explores the subversive potential of Moliere's comedy. The author of the play had fought long battles to be able to stage the work, and their trace is reflected on the very structure of the text, the depiction of particular characters and the intrigue. It is known that the final version of the play was drawn up in 1669 as a result of tenders and compromises; hence numerous cuts resulting in visible roughness of the text or changes of the title. Seen from this perspective, "Tartuffe" is almost a documentary record of the struggle for its own historic survival.
And to think that we might know some day what is happening on Mars but we will never know the first three acts of Tartuffe just as they were staged in 1664 at Versailles!
