A Song Stall. Singing pictures is a song and music show based on a songbook by Leon Schiller, stage director, theatre theoretician, teacher, one of the greatest figures in the history of Polish theatre. Staged for the first time in 1945 at a displaced persons camp in Lingen’s Polish theatre, Schiller’s show is a unique blend of musical works. The artist collected everyday songs performed in the first half of the twentieth century by burghers, artists and soldiers; songs that offer a cheek-in-the-tongue portrayal of Poles. This is how this collection of naïve and simple works was created, largely based on Schiller’s beloved Old Polish, from later historical epochs up to the inter-war period. The show contains vaudevilles, songs and dances that are wrongly associated today with lighter music yet are the quintessence of theatre.
The show is part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of restoration of Poland’s independence.
